What to do with dormant stash of yarn?
I imagine that, like me, you already had this problem. At the end of a project, either yourself or the person who created the pattern may have miscalculated the amount of yarn needed, leaving you with one or more leftover skeins.
It's not always easy to figure out what to do with a small quantity of yarn. There may not be the desire or possibility to purchase additional yarn for another large project, especially when the colors have been discontinued or there are risks in mixing dye lots.
Finding interesting smaller projects can often be a challenge.
Don't worry, I've planned to create a complete category to inspire you to use up your yarn leftovers fully, always with a focus on maximizing resource utilization and minimizing storage.
The Hypster beanie
Here, we will learn together how to create the Hypster hat, a design I specifically crafted to elevate your dormant yarn stash into a hyper-trendy and essential winter accessory!
This hat stands out with its integrated double seam, giving it that distinctive hipster flair. Its moderate height ensures you won't feel overly bulky around the neck. I've adapted it for both child and adult sizes, allowing you to make the most of even smaller yarn quantities.
For the pictured model, I used two strands: one of wool and one of mohair to add a cozy touch. Fortunately, I had leftovers in this vibrant green shade, originally used for a sweater project that I'll discuss in another article. Bright colors complement this type of design exceptionally well. I opted for 3.5mm/US4 needles to achieve a tight and clean jersey stitch.
Also, the good news is that I made a video on my YouTube channel to help you craft this beautiful hat :

The pattern
The pattern is worked in stockinette stitch from the bottom up, with an integrated seam of approximately 6 cm/2.3in (child) / 7 cm/2.7in (adult).
Materials: Approximately 220m/240 yards of wool knitted with approximately 220m/240 yards of mohair. As a substitute, I recommend choosing a sturdy main material like yak or alpaca blended with wool, paired with a fluffier material such as angora or brushed alpaca (but be cautious of pilling).
Needles: Double-pointed needles 3.5mm/US4 or equivalent to achieve the correct gauge.
Gauge (10X10 cm): 21 stitches X 26 rows
Finished Sizes: S/M 17cm/6.7in in height for a 50cm/19.7in head circumference (2 cm/0.8in ease), L/XL 19cm/7.5in in height for a 60cm/23.6in head circumference (2 cm/0.8in ease).
Abbreviations:
- r-dec: slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1 stitch, pass slipped stitch over the knitted stitch.
- l-dec: knit 2 stitches together.
These details provide the foundation for creating the Hypster hat, ensuring you achieve the desired fit and style.
The pdf instructions for the pattern are available for download at the bottom of this page.
Instructions :
Don't forget that if you're having difficulties, the pattern is available as a video tutorial on my YouTube channel, Terrifiknits!
- Cast on 104 (S/M) / 120 (L/XL) stitches in the round on 3.5mm/US4 double-pointed needles.
- Knit in stockinette stitch for 37/40 rounds.
- On the 38th/41st round, join the current round with the first round by picking up a stitch from the cast-on edge (refer to the video on my YouTube or Instagram account).
- Knit an additional 21/24 rounds.
- Place 8 markers as follows: |marker, 2 stitches, marker, 24/28 stitches| X4.
- On the 22nd/25th round, start decreases as follows: |r-dec before the 1st marker, slip marker, knit 2 stitches, slip marker, l-dec after the marker| X4.
- Repeat these decreases every 2 rounds 11/13 more times (refer to the diagram above).
- Join the remaining 8 stitches by slipping a yarn through each one and tightening.
And there you have it, your Hypster hat is finished! Now, all that's left is to test it out in real-life situations!
