Timber Hat, Free Pattern

The Inspiration

The Pattern

The pattern is worked in stockinette stitch from the bottom up, with a hem of approximately 8 cm/3.1 in.

Material: 210m/230 yards of baby merino paired with an equal amount of mohair. For substitution, I recommend choosing a structured main material like alpaca and a soft, cozy secondary material such as brushed alpaca silk.

Needles: 3.5mm/US4 double-pointed needles or equivalent to achieve the correct gauge.

Gauge 10 x 10 cm or 4 x 4 in: : 26 stitches x 28 rows in 1x1 ribbing.

Finished sizes: 25 cm/9.8 in in height with a 50 cm/19.7 in head circumference (2 cm/0.8 in of ease).

The Instructions

Don't forget that if you encounter any difficulties, the pattern is available as a video tutorial on my YouTube channel, Terrifiknits!

  • Cast on 112 stitches using 3.5mm/US4 double-pointed needles.
  • Place a marker and join in the round, ensuring the stitches are not twisted.
Continue in 1x1 ribbing (knit 1, purl 1) for 60 rounds or 18 cm/7 in.
  • On the 61st round, knit the first stitch on the needle together with the first cast-on stitch, then purl the second stitch on the needle together with the second cast-on stitch, and so on until the end of the round. You’ve created the hem of the hat.
  • Work 45 more rounds or 10 cm/4 in in 1x1 ribbing.
  • Place 7 additional markers as follows: 5 stitches (band), marker, 23 stitches (side), marker, 5 stitches (band), marker, 23 stitches (side), marker, 5 stitches (band), marker, 23 stitches (side), marker, 5 stitches (band), marker, 23 stitches (side), beginning-of-round marker.
  • [On the next round, start the decreases:
    • Knit 4 band stitches, slip the last one, knit the next stitch as it appears, and pass the slipped band stitch over.
    • *Knit to 1 stitch before the next marker: knit the stitch before and the stitch after the marker together.
    • Knit 3 band stitches, slip the last one, purl 1 stitch, and pass the slipped band stitch over.*
    • Repeat from * to * 3 more times.
    • Knit to 1 stitch before the next marker: knit the stitch before and the stitch after the marker together.
    • 8 stitches have been decreased this round: 104 stitches remain, with 5 stitches per band and 21 stitches per side.
  • For the next round, knit the stitches as they appear.]
  • Repeat from [ to ] 11 times.
  • You will have 24 stitches remaining: 5 stitches for each of the 4 bands and 1 stitch for each of the 4 sides.
  • On the next round, knit all stitches together 2 by 2: 12 stitches remain.
  • Cut the yarn, leaving about 20 cm/8 in, and thread it through the remaining 12 stitches. Pull tight.
  • Weave in the ends and block.

And there you have it, your Timber hat is finished! Now, all that's left is to test it out in real-life situations!
